SpringFlingbannerWith the end of the semester approaching us fast, stress is in the air. Exams are just around the corner and everyone is busy studying away. Along with stress in the air, so is spring, which means Spartanburg’s annual street festival, Spring Fling is about to be here!

The Spring Fling is held in downtown Spartanburg near the Chapman Cultural Center. This year the event will be on Friday, May 2 till Sunday, May 4. The event will kick off at 5 p.m. Friday and last till 11 p.m. On Saturday the event will run 10 a.m. till 9 p.m., and on Sunday the event starts at noon and will end at 7p.m.

There are many fun things to do at this event. You can listen to a variety of music, find great food of all different types, and watch a k-9s Frisbee show.  While entry to this event is free and so is being able to listen to the different bands perform, there are things at the Spring Fling that cost extra. There is a craft market there as well, which you can shop around to find handmade items from local vendors.

Each year the Spring Fling tries to bring world-wide known bands to perform at the event and this year they were able to get country star, Joe Nichols to come perform on Saturday at 7:30 p.m on the WSSL stage near the clock tower. Some other bands schedules to perform are Pulse (rock), Pure-N-Heart Choir (Christian) and Ali Henderson & Anthology (American Idol Finalist).

Ryan “Frenchy”, a senior Mass Communications major has attended this event before. “I like that there are multiple stages with different bands playing; if you don’t like one you can go down to another stage and check out a different artist or group” he said. However he warns of how crowded the event can get.

There will also be two chalk artists that will be drawing 4-D artwork throughout the event. Last year, the event feature chalk artist drawing 3-D artwork. You can stand by and watch their progress and ask them questions. There will also be two car shows, one of antique cars and one of imported cars. No matter what you are into, You are sure to find something at this event you will enjoy.

If you are looking for some volunteer hours, you are in look! You can volunteer at the Spring Fling for one more three to four hour shifts. The jobs varies that volunteers can do and you can also pick what shift you want. Each volunteer will receive a shirt for the event, snacks and drinks, along with complementary meal(s) through the shift.

“I want to thank Chevy of Spartanburg for being the sponsors of the Spring Fling this year” Jane Warner, festival coordinator said. Warner told how Chevy of Spartanburg has made this event possible to be held for as cheaply as it is. She also told how the radio stations helped to bring this artist to perform for us as well.
