Spartans Nation celebrated Midnight Madness at the Hodge Center last week.

It was a coming out party with the men and women basketball teams formally introduced and a variety of basketball skills games entertaining the students, faculty/staff, and Spartans boosters.

Upstate mascot Sparty was the master of ceremonies ushering the basketball teams into the arena as they threw T-shirts into the crowd.

An impressive slam-dunk competition, free throws, and passing skills were held before both teams finished with a game-type scrimmage.

Junior guard Camila Kilinc won the three-point shooting competition and junior forward Malik Moore tied freshman Yeskin Walker-Williams for the slam-dunk championship.

Scrimmages were coached or officiated by Chancellor Brendan Kelly, Athletic Director Julio Freire, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Dean of Students Laura Puckett-Boler, Assistant Director for Fraternity and Sorority Life and Leadership Programs John Montemayor, and Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Clif Flynn.

Sophomore twins and cross country team members, Jacob and Jared Coccia said they intended to come for the free pizza but stayed and enjoyed watching the Spartans.

Midnight Madness ended with a half-court shooting competition from A.Bevy Productions members, a hot potato dribble game, a timed three-point shooting contest, and a slam-dunk competition.

Students had the opportunity to swap any other college or high school T-shirt for a long-sleeved USC Upstate T-shirt. The old T-shirts were donated to charity.
