Love and joy filled downtown Spartanburg last weekend as friends and families gathered for the Ninth Annual Upstate Pride SC March & Festival celebration at Barnet Park.
The family-friendly festival offered a variety of activities with a kids zone, bounce houses, and a photo booth.
The day’s events began with a march through downtown and it concluded with entertainment hosted by Charleston’s Patti O’Furniture. Queens of the hit TV show, “RuPaul’s Drag Race” performed on stage.
BeBe Zahara Benet, Kimora Blac, Nina Bonina Brown, and Yara Sofia entertained the crowd and musical acts included Darby Wilcox, April B. & The Cool, and Rigor Morris.
Spartanburg Mayor Junie White spoke of his support for the LGBTQ+ community. White became the first mayor in South Carolina to officially recognize Upstate Pride Day in 2010.
“I was elected to be the people’s mayor. That means I represent every single one of you,” White said. “Most of you live here, you pay taxes here, you contribute to the city every single day, and you deserve the basic respect every human being deserves and has the right to.”
