Grace on I.T.: School email addresses give power to students
By Grace Vaughan
Being a college student can get pretty expensive. However, having an .edu email address has its perks.
There are several services that you know and probably already use that offer helpful student discounts.
USC Upstate offers Microsoft Office suite and Office 365 for free, which saves you around $60 per device you use. All Upstate emails are Office 365 accounts, which will stay active for all current students and alumni. Using this will also allow you to keep your computer updated with the most current edition of Office.
My personal favorite is Spotify Premium. If you listen to music all day like I do, this is definitely worth the price. If you change your payment to a student account, the price changes from the normal $10 a month to $5.
Another major discounted service you have access to is Amazon Prime Student. It gives you access to many different features such as free two-day shipping, unlimited reading on Prime Reading to any devices, Prime Video streaming for TV and movies.
You will have a six-month free trial and after your trial, Prime Student is just $5.49 a month. Otherwise, Prime is $10.99 a month or $99 for a year for nonstudents.
Lastly, if you want to read the news or need access to online news there is a discount for that as well.
Students and faculty can get a free electronic subscription to The New York Times for the academic year. Go to AccessNYT.com, designate that you are a student, put in your college – University of South Carolina Upstate – and register with your student email. The NYTimes Pass grants complimentary access to NYTimes.com and certain NYT apps.
The Washington Post offers a low-cost subscription and The New York Times home delivery is also offered at a discounted rate to students. Visit subscribe.washingtonpost.com/acqlite/edu-offer/.
Take advantage of these offers if you are looking for ways to make the most of your money.
